Browser Tabs

Open, switch, close, and restore tabs — never lose the consult link again.

25–40 min Needs: CB-03 · any browser Outcome: two-tab consult control

Who this is for

Anyone who loses the Zoom link, Academy page, or email inside a pile of tabs — the most common consulting friction. Tab-confident already? Skip to CB-05.

The emergency brake (if you feel stuck or panicked)

  • Closed the wrong tab? Press Ctrl+Shift+T (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+T (Mac). It comes right back.
  • Closed the whole window? Reopen the browser, then History → Recently Closed. Your tabs are usually all there.
  • 40 tabs and rising panic? Close extras until two remain. Fewer tabs is always allowed.

Open one window, three tabs

About 10 min

Tabs live inside one browser window. A new window is a separate rectangle — different thing (see CB-03).

  1. Open your browser. Press Cmd+T (Mac) or Ctrl+T (Windows) for a new tab.
  2. Go to a site you know (weather, news, anything).
  3. Open two more tabs the same way — three total, one window.
  4. Click each tab slowly. Name them aloud: “Academy. Weather. Mail.”

Try this

Open three tabs right now, then click each one in turn.

You should see: three labeled tabs in a row, switching cleanly as you click. If a second window opened instead, close it — Cmd/Ctrl+T is tabs, Cmd/Ctrl+N is windows.

Undo: wrong tab closed? Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+T brings it back.

Close and restore until boring

About 10 min

  1. Close the middle tab (X on the tab, or Cmd/Ctrl+W).
  2. Restore it: Cmd+Shift+T (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+T (Windows).
  3. Do the close-and-restore loop twice, until it feels ordinary.

Try this

Close this lesson tab, then restore it with the shortcut.

You should see: this page returning exactly as you left it. That round trip is your safety net for every future consult.

Don't

Install a random “tab manager” extension from an ad. Three calm tabs beat forty managed ones.

Run the consult simulation

About 5–10 min

  1. Close everything until exactly two tabs remain: (1) this lesson, (2) a notes page or email.
  2. Practice switching between only those two — by click, then once with Ctrl+Tab.

Grab the drill card and repeat it this week — tabs deserve practice until boring:

Prefer paper via browser? Print-ready HTML version (File → Print → Save as PDF).

Success check

  • Opened a tab without opening a whole new window (or can tell the difference)
  • Switched tabs by click and tried Ctrl/Cmd+Tab once
  • Restored a closed tab

Common failure modes

FailureFix
Shortcut “does nothing”Click inside the browser window first so it has focus
Closed the whole windowReopen the browser; History → Recently Closed; the shortcut may restore all
40 tabs, can’t find anythingClose extras down to two; pinning and bookmarks come later

Don't install / get help

Don’t install a random “tab manager” extension from an ad. Get help if every click opens a new window instead of a tab after two honest tries — that’s a settings issue, not a you issue.
