Windows vs Apps

Tell an app from a window — and stop “losing” windows.

20–30 min Needs: CB-02 Outcome: app vs window clarity + recovery

Who this is for

Anyone who “lost” a window or keeps reopening the same app. Already juggle apps calmly? Skip to CB-04.

The emergency brake (if you feel stuck or panicked)

  • A window vanished? It is minimized, not gone. Click its icon on the Dock (Mac) or taskbar (Windows) to bring it back.
  • Trapped in full screen? Move the pointer to the very top for the menu (Mac), or press Esc (Windows).

Learn the words that matter

About 5 min

  1. Say out loud: “The app is the program — Safari, Chrome, Word.”
  2. Say out loud: “A window is one open rectangle from that app. I can have two browser windows, each with many tabs.”

Mac note: closing the red dot often leaves the app running (a dot stays under its Dock icon). That is normal.

Run the three-button drill

About 10 min

  1. Open one browser window. Minimize it — then bring it back from the Dock/taskbar.
  2. Maximize it (or full screen), then exit back to normal size.
  3. Close the window. Notice whether the app itself quit or stayed open.

Try this

Minimize this lesson window, then recover it without reopening the browser from scratch.

You should see: this same page coming back. That round trip — minimize, recover — is the whole skill.

Undo: closed the wrong window? Reopen it from the Dock/taskbar icon.

Switch without chaos

About 5 min

  1. Open the browser plus Notes (Mac) or Notepad (Windows).
  2. Switch between them three times with the keyboard or the Dock/taskbar.
  3. Land on the one you want and stop. No extra copies.
Don't

Keep clicking the Dock/taskbar icon when an app is already open — that opens another copy. Switch instead.

Success check

  • Minimized and restored one window
  • Switched between two apps with keyboard or click
  • Closed a window without panicking

Common failure modes

FailureFix
Full screen “trapped”Mac: move pointer to top for the menu; Windows: Esc or the restore button
Closed wrong windowReopen from Dock/taskbar; tab restore comes in CB-04
Ten copies of NotesClose extras; use the switcher instead of re-clicking the icon

Don't force-quit / get help

Don’t force-quit everything when one window misbehaves — force-quit is for true freezes. Get help if the screen is stuck and the pointer won’t move for several minutes.
