Who this is for
Anyone who opens five copies of an app or can’t find a context menu. Clicks already land where you mean? Skip to CB-03.
The emergency brake (if you feel stuck or panicked)
- Opened five copies of something? That is normal. Close the extras one at a time — nothing is broken.
- Lost the pointer? Wiggle the mouse fast or swipe the trackpad — your eyes will catch the movement.
Learn one click vs two
About 8 min
On the Desktop or in Downloads, practice on one file: single-click selects (highlights). Double-click opens.
- Single-click one file. Notice it highlights but stays closed.
- Pause. Then double-click it to open.
- If two windows appear, you double-clicked twice — close the extra and try once more.
Try this
Select one file with a single click, then open it with a double-click.
You should see: one window opening — not two, not five. If extras opened, close them calmly. That recovery is the skill.
Open a right-click menu
About 8 min
- Right-click (or two-finger click on a trackpad) one file.
- Read the menu: Open, Rename, Move to Trash/Recycle Bin. Choose nothing.
- Press Escape or click empty space to dismiss the menu.
Choose Delete or anything permanent while practicing. Read the menu, then dismiss it — Escape always backs out.
Scroll without losing the page
About 5 min
Open any long page. Scroll down slowly, then back up.
- On a Mac: Two fingers glide on the trackpad.
- On Windows: Two fingers on the trackpad, or roll the mouse wheel.
Try this
Scroll to the bottom of this lesson, then back to the top.
You should see: the same page, top to bottom, under your control. If the page zoomed instead, you pinched — press Cmd+0 (Mac) or Ctrl+0 (Windows) to reset.
Success check
- Opened one app/file without spawning extras (or closed extras calmly)
- Opened and dismissed a right-click menu
- Scrolled a page up and down
Common failure modes
| Failure | Fix |
|---|---|
| Double-click too slow = two singles | Practice the rhythm; or select, then press Enter/Return to open |
| Trackpad right-click “doesn’t work” | Enable secondary click in settings — or plug in a mouse |
| Accidental drag moved files | Click without holding; undo a move with Cmd/Ctrl+Z |
