Who this is for
Beginners who always open Terminal from Spotlight/Start and land in ~.
Which machine are you on? (saved across terminal + folder lessons)
↑ Pick one to see only your path. (Showing all until you do.)
The emergency brake
- Terminal opened at home again? That’s the default, not a failure. Use the open-here method below — or just
cdwith your written path. - IDE opened the wrong folder? Close it (no saving needed) and use Open Folder on
my-apponly.
Open in terminal once
About 10–15 min
Two valid patterns — pick one and stick to it:
- Explorer → Open in Terminal → agent (cwd set before the agent), or
- IDE Open Folder → integrated terminal → agent (cwd = opened folder).
- Finder: drag the project folder onto the Terminal icon — or copy the path and
cdto it. - Explorer: click the address bar, type
powershellorwt, press Enter. Or right-click → Open in Terminal where shown. - Open Ubuntu, then
cdto the path. Or from PowerShell:wsl --cd /home/you/projects/my-app.
cd ~/Documents/Projects/my-app
cd $env:USERPROFILE\Documents\Projects\my-app
cd ~/projects/my-app
Try this
Open a terminal in your project using one method above. Do not launch an agent yet.
You should see: a prompt whose path ends in your project name. Type pwd to confirm — the leaf folder should be my-app.
Launch the agent first from home, then ask it to “go find my project among 200 folders.” Folder first, agent second.
Try the IDE route (optional)
About 10 min
- If you use Cursor or VS Code: File → Open Folder… on
my-apponly — notProjects, not home. - Open the integrated terminal. Confirm
pwdshows the project.
Write your habit note
About 5 min
- Write which method you’ll use daily: Finder/Explorer or IDE Open Folder. Stick to it for a week.
Success check
- Terminal opened in the project (or you
cd’d before anything else) - Method written for next time
Common failure modes
| Failure | Fix |
|---|---|
Terminal opens at ~ every time | Use Open-in-Terminal / Open Folder; or keep a snippet with your cd path |
IDE opened parent Projects | Close; Open Folder on my-app |
| Windows “Open in Terminal” missing | Use address-bar powershell / Windows Terminal, or cd manually |
Don't buy open-here tools
Don’t install a third-party “terminal here” shareware for this module — the built-in methods above are enough.
Bring the exact path and the exact error text to a free 30-minute consult. Copy them first — vague “it doesn't work” wastes the call.
