Who this is for
Anyone who has asked a chat for a store or agency rule, noticed it didn't match their paper, and wondered who was right. The answer is simple: the paper or official site always wins.
The emergency brake
- Chat argues or insists it's right? Do not debate it. Close the tab or click New chat. The chat does not know your store or local town council.
- Rule on the paper or receipt is confusing? Call the phone number printed right on the paper. Real humans answer store and office phones.
Look at the disagreement
About 3 min
Chatbots are designed to sound polite and extremely sure of themselves, even when they're inventing facts from thin air. Notice this common contrast:
The classic clash
What the chat said: “Most retail stores offer a standard 30-day return window for all purchases.”
What your printed receipt says: “Returns accepted within 14 days with original receipt. Clearance items final sale.”
Which one determines whether you get your money back at the customer service desk? The receipt. The store clerk has never heard of your chatbot and doesn't care what it said.
Write down the winning answer
About 3 min
Take your pen and write the truth on your paper or notes:
- Write: 14 days — from the receipt.
- Do not ask the chat: “Are you sure? My receipt says 14 days.” That invites the chat to invent excuses or quote outdated state policies.
Ask the chat to break the tie. The chat cannot overrule the company's printed policy.
When the page is silent, pick up the phone
About 4 min
What if you want to return an item that has already been opened, but neither the receipt nor the website says whether opened boxes are accepted?
- Do not ask the chat to guess.
- On your paper, write: “Not answered — call store.”
- Find the store's customer service number printed on your receipt or on their official website contact page.
- Write that number down:
(732) 555-0140. That is your next step.
Try this
Look at one receipt, utility bill, or town flyer on your desk right now.
You should see: an official phone number printed directly on it. That printed number is your verified link to the real world — keep it handy.

Success check
- Wrote the official page or receipt answer, not the chatbot's claim
- Did not ask the chat to break the tie or explain the difference
- Identified the official phone number printed on the document if anything was missing
Common failure modes
| Failure | Fix |
|---|---|
| Argued with the chat about what the receipt says | Close the chat tab. Arguing with a text predictor wastes your morning. The receipt wins. |
| Searched for a phone number and clicked a paid ad | Always look at the bottom of the printed receipt or paper notice first. If searching, verify the domain matches. |
| Assumed the chat knew local store quirks | Browser chats have no live sensors in Monmouth County stores. Only staff know what's on the shelf today. |
