Read this part, then close the lesson
This one works best a few days after FC-2, with the lesson closed. Skim the steps below once, then close this tab. Keep only the worksheet's brake card on the desk. Doing it from memory is the whole point — that's what makes it stick.
Can't remember a step? Open this page again. That's allowed. Try once more from memory next time.
The full brake card is on the worksheet
- Typing too much? Stop — the square where the send arrow was.
- Closed the tab?
Ctrl+Shift+T(Mac:Cmd+Shift+T). - Strange or off track? New chat.
- Shared computer? Initial or picture → Log out, then close the browser.
- Something private went in? Oops steps: don't paste it again, delete the chat, change the password or call your card's number, tell a person you trust.
- Stuck after two honest tries? Stop. Book a human.
Type the address from memory
About 1 min
- Open a new tab. Type your site's address from memory. Press Enter.
- Write it on the worksheet line: The address I use: ______.
Search for it if you forget. Look at your worksheet from FC-1 — you circled it there.
One small real question
About 3 min
- Click New chat so you start clean.
- Ask one small real question from your week. End it with "Answer in 3 short lines."
You type:
What's a simple way to keep track of which bills I've paid this month? Answer in 3 short lines.
A good short answer looks like:
Write each bill on one sheet of paper.
When you pay one, put a check mark and the date next to it.
Keep the sheet in the same place every month.
Your answer will be worded differently. That's normal. Check it has the same parts: 3 short lines you could actually do.
Put amounts, account numbers, or company names in a bills question. "Which bills I've paid" is plenty.
Paste one sentence of your own
About 2 min
- Pick one sentence you wrote. Swap names and places for stand-ins.
- Start with
Rewrite my note below so it is clear and polite. Do not add anything I did not say. Answer in 3 short lines.— then your sentence between---lines. - Read the answer against your sentence. Anything added? Point at it.
Delete the chat
About 2 min
- Find this chat in the side list. If you don't see a side list, click the menu icon (often three lines or a panel shape) to open it.
- Point at the chat's name. Click ⋯ → Delete. Confirm if it asks.
Not signed in on chatgpt.com? There's no side list, because nothing was saved. Click New chat → Clear chat, or close the tab. That's your delete.
Try this
Delete the chat you just had.
You should see: the chat's name gone from the side list. If you can't find ⋯, right-click the chat's name — some sites put Delete there.
Shared computer? Log out
About 1 min
- Shared or library computer: click your initial or picture → Log out.
- Close the browser.
One thing to know, nothing to do: some sites have a "temporary chat" switch. It's fine to use. It doesn't make it safe to paste anything on the card.
Success check
- Did it without the lesson open
- Deleted the chat
- Signed out (if shared)
This week
Sometime in the week after this lesson, use the chat once more for something real, with the lesson closed — and nothing from the don't-paste card goes in. That's it. If you can say the address you type and point at Stop and New chat, you're done with First Chat.
Common snags
| Snag | Fix |
|---|---|
| Forgot the address | Check the worksheet. Type it; don't search. |
| Can't find the side list | Look for a menu icon near the top corner. Still nothing? Book a human — these sites change. |
| It's asking me to sign in again | That's normal after a few days. Use the same way you signed in before (same email, or the same Google account). |
| A new chat mentions something I typed before | Don't paste it again to test. Follow the Oops steps. |
Stop / don't
If a later chat mentions something private you typed earlier, don't paste it again to test. Follow the Oops steps on the brake card.
Brake: the full brake card, on your worksheet.
