CA-1 · Chat vs. agents

Talks, Does, Codes

One rule that tells a chat from an agent on any brand — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok.

15 min · paper and pen Needs: Computer Basics (First Chat helps) Outcome: the test question, from memory

Who this is for

Anyone who has seen words like Cowork, Work, Codex, Spark, Imagine, or Build and wondered if they're missing something. You're not. This lesson is paper only — nothing to open, nothing to turn on.

The emergency brake

  • Nothing to click in this lesson. Paper can't touch anything.
  • Feeling behind? You aren't. Most people who use chat every day have never turned on an agent — and don't need to.

Learn the rule

About 3 min

The rule — works on every brand

Talks back → chat. Does it for you → agent. Does it to code → code agent.

The test question: After I press Enter, can it touch anything besides this conversation?

  • No → chat. It writes words (or a picture) back to you. That's all.
  • Yes — your files or folders, a browser that clicks for you, your email, calendar, or apps, or it keeps working after you close the laptop → agent.
  • Yes, and it talks about code, a "repo," a terminal, or "pull requests" → code agent. That's a different track.

Try this

Say the test question out loud once. Then write it on the worksheet line.

You should have: one sentence on paper — After I press Enter, can it touch anything besides this conversation?

Sort eight asks

About 8 min

Next to each ask, write C (chat), A (agent), K (code agent), or ✋ (stop — a person or an official page, not any bot). Cover the answer column with a sticky note first.

Worked example — the eight asks, with the key
#The askAnswerWhy
1“Make my note to the landlord sound polite.”CWords in, words out.
2“What does this recycling notice mean?” (typed lines, no photo)CWords in, words out.
3“Go through my Downloads folder and sort everything.”A · folderIt would open and move your files. You can do this yourself (CB-07).
4“Every Monday, read my email and send me a summary.”A · inboxIt reads real mail and runs when you're not there.
5“Fix the bug in my website's checkout code.”KCode in a project folder — the terminal track.
6“Draw a lighthouse for a birthday card.”CIt hands back a picture. Nothing of yours is touched.
7“Is this chest pain serious?”✋Stop card 1. Call your doctor, or 911 in an emergency.
8“Fill in and submit my unemployment form.”✋Stop card 4. The agency's own site or a navigator. You submit, not a bot.

Your wording on the “why” will be different. That's normal. Check the letters match.

Name what the agents would touch

About 3 min

For every A you wrote, add one word: folder, inbox, browser, calendar. That word is the whole reason to slow down.

Don't

Go turn anything on to “see what it does.” That's an optional lesson much later (CA-5), and only for people who already pay for a plan.

Success check

  • I can say the test question without looking
  • At least 6 of 8 match the key
  • I can say why 7 and 8 aren't a job for any bot

Don't buy / get help

Nothing to buy. If an ad or a stranger says you “need an AI agent” after reading this, you don't — you now know what one is and what it would touch.

Still not sure which is which?

That's fair — the companies rename these every few months. Book a free 15-minute consult and we'll look at your screen together.
